Mayday, Mayday! France is On Fire
Protests in France continued on May Day, the International Workers’ Day. Massive protests were held in cities all over France to vent national anger against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne hypocritically denounced violence at the protests, despite the ongoing police brutality. “In many cities in France, this May Day was a moment for responsible mobilisation and commitment. The scenes of violence on the sidelines of the demonstrations are all the more unacceptable,” she wrote on Twitter.
This is not to deny that there were incidence of violence from protestors, however. A molotov cocktail was thrown and several police were burned by the flames in Paris. Many businesses were looted and defaced with graffiti, including banks and a McDonald’s in Lyon.
French authorities pegged the numbers at 782,000 protestors across France, including 112,000 in Paris alone. The CGT union, deeply involved in the protest movement, estimated it higher at 2.3 million protesters across France, including 550,000 in the capital.
In March, Macron invoked article 49.3 of the constitution to ram the pension reform through parliament without a vote in the hung lower house. Increasing the retirement age from 62 to 64 has enraged the entire nation, a feat only accomplished by a handful of political mis-managers in recent history. Both the left and the right have joined in the protests. The CGT union, as well as the yellow vests are out on the streets.
We compiled multiple video clips, mostly from indie journalist on the scene at the protests.
