As a disclaimer, this post might offend some, and I do apologize in advance. I don’t mean to be rude, but even though I’m curious about this subject, I’m also a critic. The problem with sharing what’s on your mind is that the longer you talk, the odds of triggering someone else increases exponentially. It’s one of the facts of online life, maybe we should call it the Trigger Effect.
I’ve encountered many, many people in the last three years who promote a worldview that at first sounds intriguing, and then confusing. I have suggested, to more than a few members of this club, that they all seem to have the same lingo, and maybe it’s a cult? My suggestion was met with immediate denials.
The basic tenets of this non-cult are that spirituality is energy, and we all need to vibrate at higher frequencies to enter the 5th dimension. People who have lower energy, that is, vibrating at lower frequencies are still in the 3rd dimension. The 4th dimension never seems to be mentioned, although it seems there is a lot of weed smoking and tantric sex there on your way to the 5th.
I was informed people who don’t recycle are definitely not in their higher frequencies. Also anyone with anger is low vibes. Sorry, if you stubbed your toe this morning and swore, but you probably dropped down a dimension or two.
Along with this lingo, also comes a whole slew, of what could only be described as mythology about ancient races, time travel, the Akashic Records, past lives, shape shifters, aliens and lost civilisations. In case you didn’t know the Akashic Records:
“ … are believed to be the repository of every thought, word, and deed of every living being, good, bad, and awful, in all times; past, present, future. But those familiar with the records report that there is no judgment or implied penalty in the records — they are said to simply be a record of each soul’s journey through the infinite.”
Helena Blavatsky claims she learned about these records from Tibetan monks. A brief search reveals no reference by Buddhists or Tibetan monks to the existence of these records. Just saying, it appears that Blavatsky is the actual source of this concept.
In comparison, Christianity and Judaism teach there is a Book of Life, Sefer HaChaim, in which God records the name of every person destined for heaven. If your name is not recorded in the Book of Life, then you are destined for sheol, Hebrew for grave, and therefore spiritual death. Many Christians believe those whose names are not written down are headed for the Lake of Fire, where their souls will burn for all of eternity.
But we digress.
The members of the Church of Vibrations don’t like to be labeled “New Age” or even believe they are in a movement. They see themselves as part of the “dawning of the Age of Aquarius,” an “evolution of consciousness” that is happening right now, and they believe that we are in a transition, a polar shift, a great awakening, that will lead to ultimate peace on Earth and everyone will recycle and vibrate at the proper frequencies.
According to guru, Sylvia Salow, “We’re collectively shifting to the fifth dimension, which brings about a new level of consciousness. Those changes can be seen in the whole society as the old structures are slowly disintegrating.” The New Agers don’t believe the current paradigm will endure, and so, we have to start all over again and build a parallel hippie society without all those annoying rules, traffic laws and government. You might be tempted to say their political worldview is libertarian spiritual anarchy because most New Agers are apolitical and reject public participation in politics.
Here are Sylvia’s 19 signs that you are well on your way to 5th Dimensional bliss.
Gaia.com has a vast website of 8000 videos and tutorials about a variety of subjects, that can give a casual visitor some idea about what the New Age Movement is all about:
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe think in terms of frequency, energy and vibration.”
~ Nikola Tesla
The New Agers are inspired by the last centuries’ advances in frequency-based technology, and attempt a merger of quantum science and spirituality. Nikola Tesla wasn’t referring to the secrets of the spiritual universe, however, he was referring to the secrets of the physical universe. The New Age members blur these lines, and for the most part, do not believe in duality. To them, energy and spirit are one and the same.
The New Age “bible,” for lack of a better word, is often referred to as the Aquarian Conspiracy by Marilyn Ferguson. Its critics claim it is an overly optimistic mishmash of eastern mysticism and self-help psychology. The New Age Movement, and now we’re calling a spade a spade, is heavily influenced by the human potential movement that sprang up along side it, in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Aquarian Conspiracy, is itself, subtitled “Personal and Social Transformation in the 1980’s.”
Ferguson discusses the rapid growth of the “movement that has no name” in the introduction to her book: “As its networks grew, the conspiracy became truer with every passing week. Groups seemed to be organizing spontaneously all over the country and abroad. In their announcements and internal communications, they expressed the same conviction: “We are in the midst of a great transformation ... In this period of cultural awakening ...” Conspirators connected me with other conspirators: politicians, stewards of corporate or private wealth, celebrities, professionals trying to change their professions, and ordinary people accomplishing miracles of social change. These, in turn, put me in touch with still others and their networks.”
Though it is barely acknowledged in our society, social darwinism has become an underlying and unconscious theme, and it has permeated practically all of our culture. The human potential movement is, in reality, a PR program for social darwinism. And this is because our society is so horribly self-centered. Social darwinism says that human beings can self-evolve, either due to technological advances in genetics or medicine, or through the wilful transformation of the individual through an active program of healing, exercise, “doing the inner work” and diet. In other words, if people can live at their peak potential, then they can aspire to higher levels of achievement, based on the survival of the fittest model of human advancement.
In contrast, all mainstream religions teach some form of social service as a higher value. There is no real religion or spirituality without service to others, because better relationships with friends, family and nations is the natural result of a healthy spirit and an active soul. If your religion is not making you a better person, then you probably need a better religion.
Selflessness is not something that religions talk much about anymore, especially in our society, because people are so preoccupied with self and the desires of self. Both Buddha and Jesus of Nazareth taught non-attachment to desires because desires imprison the self.
“He who finds himself, will lose himself, and he who loses himself will find himself.”
~ Jesus of Nazareth
“And this, monks, is the noble truth of the origination of unhappiness: the craving that makes for further becoming — accompanied by passion & delight, relishing now here & now there — i.e., craving for sensual pleasure, craving for becoming, craving for non-becoming.”
— SN 56.11
On a lighter note, my experience with the New Agers is that they are fresh and optimistic, in comparison to many of the Abrahamic faiths, who seem dogmatic and fatalistic about the future, and resigned to a very bleak endtimes world view of Satanic death and destruction. The Church of Vibrations seem more open-minded to other spiritual paths, and the New Age Movement has not (so far) turned into an institutional religion with an authoritarian priest-class, creeds and doctrines that everyone must follow.
May you be one with the universe and vibe high, expanding your consciousness to the 5th dimension … and don’t forget to recycle.
