This week, celebrated Canadian jazz pianist and Trudeau impersonator, John Julian Stetch, had his gigs cancelled at Frankie’s Jazz Club and Tyrant Studios in Vancouver, because of a letter signed by 40 young musicians, most of them Capilano College graduates. John’s comedy videos, mocking Trudeau were condemned with accusations of racism, homophobia and transphobia, almost as if the young millennials who cancelled him are reading from the same script fed to them by the mainstream media and their influencers.
Neither Frankie’s nor Tyrant Studios have responded to requests for comments. It is sad that politics have infected the music world to the extent that some musicians’ politics are welcome and other musicians’ politics are unacceptable.
Live music venues thrive because of music lovers who can afford to dine out and attend a ticketed event. In today’s live jazz scene, venues succeed largely by the fans that musicians bring to the venue. Segregating musicians who hold different views is the venues shooting themselves in the foot. Music venues will come and go, but music fans are often loyal to their musicians, and very soon, new music venues and music communities will be created.
From John Stetch’s bio:
“Fearless pianist John Stetch pushes the edges of his jazz and classical training to fuse melodies from all around the world; from Mozart to Ukrainian folk music to TV themes. Originally from Edmonton, Stetch started piano late, at age 19, and is now a Steinway Artist and a 6-time Juno nominee. Stetch has played at the top New York clubs – Mezzrow, Smoke, Birdland, the Jazz Standard and just released his 15th CD - Vulneraville: The Vancouver Concert.”
We reprint the letter here in full:
We interviewed John from his downtown Vancouver apartment, to hear his thoughts on this disturbing action taken against him by his fellow musicians:
